(Updated June 12, 2019)

Welcome to the Hot Wheels™ id FAQ page. Mattel supports principles of safety, and privacy and security by design in producing mixed play experiences, and encourages you take a moment to review answers to some frequently asked questions about Hot Wheels™ id and our privacy and security practices. If you have questions that aren’t addressed on this page, please contact Customer Service.

About Hot Wheels ID

What is Hot Wheels™ id?

Hot Wheels™ id is an evolution of the beloved brand that brings physical and digital play experiences together with uniquely measurable cars, a race portal, and Smart Track™, so you can build your personalized fleet, measure your performance and compete like never before.

Who is the intended audience of Hot Wheels™ id?

The Hot Wheels™ id experience is appealing and intended for all ages. It promotes the concept of “mixed play,” which is designed keep valuable physical engagement at the heart of play and extend it to an exciting, digitally-enabled realm. Kids are encouraged to physically play with the actual physical product (age-graded 8+ consistent with applicable product safety requirements for toys). The Companion App is designed so that consumers of all ages – from grandparents and parents to our large fan base of Hot Wheels® Collectors to kids – can digitally play the game without using or purchasing the physical product.

How does Hot Wheels™ id work?

The Hot Wheels™ id system consists of the Hot Wheels™ id vehicles, the Hot Wheels™ id Smart Track™ Kit, the Race Portal and the free-to-play Hot Wheels™ id App.

The Hot Wheels™ id Smart Track™ Kit Set comes with a Smart Track™, Race Portal, and two exclusive Hot Wheels™ id cars. You will also need to download the Hot Wheels™ id App to see the cars’ performance data and fully experience Hot Wheels™ id.

Each Hot Wheels™ id car contains a uniquely coded near field communication (“NFC”) chip. The Smart Track™ and Race Portal contain sensors that read the chip and measure the car’s performance, such as completed laps and speed, as you control their speed with the booster as they race around the track.

When you scan your car into Hot Wheels™ id, your car and its performance data will appear in your digital garage in the companion app.

Keep in mind that the car’s performance data stays with the car. If you share your car with someone else and they scan the car, the car and its performance data will move out of your digital garage and into their garage.

Do I have to have Smart Track™ and/or the Race Portal to play Hot Wheels™ id?

Nope! While the Smart Track™ and Race Portal definitely make things more fun and allow you to race in the physical world and prove whose car is the fastest, you can still play in the Hot Wheels™ id digital universe with just a smart device and the Hot Wheels™ id companion app.

Do I have to download the Companion App to play Hot Wheels™ id?

No, you can still race our physical cars on the track, but you won’t be able to see the car’s performance data or play the digital game without the App.

Getting Started

How do I put Hot Wheels™ id Smart Track™ Kit together?

Follow the build instructions in the packaging or the Companion App.

Is a companion app required to use Hot Wheels™ id?

You will need to download the Hot Wheels™ id Companion App if you want to measure the performance of your cars or play the digital game. You will also need the App to receive periodic updates for the App and the Race Portal.

The App is available for Apple iOS App store at launch and will be available for Android in the Google Play store starting on or about July 10, 2019.

Do I need a smart device with Wi-fi to play Hot Wheels™ id?

If you want to have the full Hot Wheels™ id experience, you will need Wi-fi to use the Companion App to see the performance of your cars in your digital garage and play the digital game. You will also need Wi-fi to receive periodic updates for the App and the Race Portal. You may also use cellular data instead of Wi-fi, but you may incur charges depending on your carrier and your plan.

Do I need a smart device with Bluetooth® to play Hot Wheels™ id?

Yes, if you want to have the full Hot Wheels™ id experience. If you don’t use a Bluetooth® enabled smart device, you will not be able to see your physical cars and their performance in your digital garage.

Before connecting your smart device to the Race Portal, make sure your device’s Bluetooth® is on. Be sure to check the device compatibility list below to make sure your device is supported!

Do not attempt to connect through your device’s Bluetooth® settings. Because the Hot Wheels™ id Bluetooth® connection is secure, you will not find it listed in your device Settings > Bluetooth. Connection between the track and your device happens within the Hot Wheels™ id Companion App when Bluetooth® is enabled.

In some instances, the Hot Wheels™ id App may request that you enable location on your device when first connecting. This is a feature of Bluetooth® pairing. The App needs this information to connect with the Race Portal and receive information from the Race Portal about your Hot Wheels™ id cars and their performance. The App, through the mobile operating system, uses approximate location information to find the Race Portal in its proximity. It does not use precise location, and it does not track your precise location.

Is my device compatible Hot Wheels™ id?

Before purchasing Hot Wheels™ id, make sure your device meets the minimum requirements below:

Apple:
  • iOS 11 or newer
  • iPhone 7, iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPad Air 2, iPad 5th Generation (2017), iPad 6th Generation (2018), iPad Pro, 10.5-inch iPad Pro. (2016 and newer devices recommended)

Available for Android on Google Play starting on or around July 10, 2019.
    • Android OS 8.0 or higher, 64 bit. RAM 3GB or higher
    • Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8 / S8+, S9 / S9+ Tab S4, Google Pixel (2016 and newer devices recommended)

NOTE: The list of compatible devices may change at any time and without any notice.

Is an account required to use Hot Wheels™ id?

No account is required. Simply download the Companion App and use the App or the Race Portal to scan your cars and play.

You may choose to sign up for a Mattel Login account. Mattel Login helps keep kids safe online and provides parents with information about their child’s online activities. Mattel Login may be required to access certain features that may be added to Hot Wheels™ id from time to time. For more information, see the Mattel Login FAQ.

Do I have to provide information before I can use Hot Wheels™ id?

We request that you provide your age when you download the Companion App so that we can obtain demographics to better understand our users. We do not request additional information from you unless you sign up for Mattel Login. For more information, see the Mattel Login FAQ.

Does a parent have to set up Hot Wheels™ id before a child can play with it?

No, a parent does not have to set up Hot Wheels™ id. A child can play using only the Smart Track™ Kit and its physical cars. However, to fully experience Hot Wheels™ id, the parent will need to download the Companion App in order for the child to see the cars and their performance information in the App’s digital garage and play the digital game.

If the child signs up for Mattel Login, the parent will be notified. As new features are added, consent will be requested from the parent for any features of Hot Wheels™ id and/or Mattel Login that require parental consent. For more information, see Mattel Login FAQ.

Game Play

My cars fly off the track. How do I keep them on?

Hot Wheels™ id is a skill-based game. Make sure to follow the recommendations in the Companion App to avoid over-pumping the booster and try to hone your skills to keep up the high-flying action and complete all the challenges!

The endcap isn’t showing up in the Hot Wheels™ id Companion App. Why is it missing?

The endcap is small and meant to capture the cars as they race through the track. In fact, it’s so small and effective that we couldn’t fit electronics inside, so it will not show in the builds on the Companion App. Add it whenever you need to close the end of a drag race.

The endcap pops off when I play a drag race. How do I keep it connected?

Careful with that speed! If the endcap is popping off the end, you may be applying too much pressure to the booster! Slow down, hone that skill, and race off.

Can I use my standard Hot Wheels® tracks with Hot Wheels™ id or does it only work with Smart Track™?

Yes. As long as you have a Race Portal, you can combine the portal and Smart Track™ with standard Hot Wheels® tracks for more challenging builds. You won’t be able to see the standard tracks in the Companion App, but the Race Portal and Smart Track™ will still record the performance information for your Hot Wheels™ id cars.

How do I scan my Hot Wheels™ cars into my digital garage?

Our Race Portal kit allows you to use Bluetooth® to scan physical cars into Hot Wheels™ id Companion App. Just enable the Bluetooth® on your smart device, connect the portal to your device in the App, hit the scanning button in the App, and then place the car on/in the portal to scan your car. You’ll know the scan was successful when you see the car appear on your device.

You can also scan your cars using your Bluetooth® enabled smart phone. To do so you will need to enable Bluetooth, press the “scan’ button, and place the car over the near field communication (“NFC”) reader on your mobile device. For Apple iPhones, the reader is located near the top of the device. Note that Apple iPads do not currently read NFC, so you will need a Race Portal to scan cars for use with an iPad.

For Android devices, the NFC antenna is located on the back of your smart device (location varies from device to device). Hot Wheels™ id will be available for Android on or around July 10, 2019.

If I delete the Companion App, will my Hot Wheels™ id still work?

You can still play in the physical world, but you won’t be able to see your cars’ performance information or play the digital game. If you decide to download the App again later, your digital game play will start fresh and you will need to scan your cars into the App again to see the cars and their performance data in your garage. However, any in-App purchases you made will be maintained through your app store when you download the App again.

How can I maintain my Hot Wheels™ id game play and progress across different devices?

If you sign up with Mattel Login, certain aspects of your game play data and progress may be carried across multiple devices. At launch, this will include some digital features only. Physical car data can only be associated with one device at a time, and it must be entered by scanning the car into the Companion App on that device. For more information about Mattel Login, see the Mattel Login FAQ.

Product Features

Does Hot Wheels™ id collect precise location information?

No, Hot Wheels™ id does not collect location information.

Does Hot Wheels™ id have a microphone?

No, Hot Wheels™ id does not have a microphone.

Does Hot Wheels™ id have a camera?

No, Hot Wheels™ id does not have a camera.

The Hot Wheels™ id Companion App may ask for permission to access the camera on your mobile device so that you can capture screens from the Companion App and save them to your camera roll. The permission does not allow Hot Wheels™ id to access to your photos.

How does Hot Wheels™ id you identify each car?

Each Hot Wheels™ id car has a uniquely encoded near-field communication (“NFC”) chip that identifies each unique vehicle. Even if you have two cars of the same model, the NFC chips are different. Think of the NFC chip in each car as its VIN (vehicle identification number).

Why does Hot Wheels™ id use NFC?

NFC is a secure, convenient, and reliable way to identify each unique vehicle and maintain safety and privacy. It’s the same technology that secure mobile payments like Apple Pay.

Can Hot Wheels™ id be turned on and off?

Yes, the Race Portal and any Smart Track™ connected through the portal may be turned on and off by pressing on id button on the portal. You’ll know it’s on when the button lights up. To turn the portal off, hold the button for 3 seconds until the light turns off. Once the portal is off, the sensors in the portal and Smart Track® will not be able to read the NFC chips in the cars.

Can kids access the Internet with Hot Wheels™ id?

The Hot Wheels™ id Smart Track™ Kit does not connect to the Internet. Kids using the Companion App may navigate from the App to the Mattel’s Hot Wheels® website.

Does the Companion App include in-App Purchases?

Yes, certain features for enhanced play are available for purchase through the App.

Children can only make in-App purchases if their parent’s app store settings allow access to the store without entering the parent’s app store password. To prevent a child from making a in-App purchase, parents should ensure that their App store settings require that the parent’s password be entered before the store can be accessed and purchases can be made.

Does Hot Wheels™ id or the Companion App include advertising?

Hot Wheels™ id and its Companion App will not include advertising at launch. However, we do anticipate that advertising will be included in future updates to the Companion App. Any advertising displayed to children in future updates to the Companion App will be appropriate for children and will not involve any tracking or targeted advertising.

Data Privacy and Security

What data does Hot Wheels™ id or the Companion App Collect?

We limit our collection of information through Hot Wheels™ id to what is needed to support your game play experience and our internal operations, such as saving your game scores and progress, improving game features and functionality.

  • No account login or registration is required to play Hot Wheels™ id. As a guest player, your experience is anonymized and not associated with an identity of a specific individual. Hot Wheels™ id does not collect IP addresses or device IDs.
  • We use a randomly issued unique identifier to collect the data such as game progress, game scores, fuel, and vehicle performance data, such as laps or speed. This means, for example that we would know a certain car is scanned into the game 5 times a week by Player1234 and it went 425 game MPH [scaled speed] on a course.
  • If you use the Hot Wheels™ id Companion App, we will ask for your age so that we can collect aggregate demographic data regarding our users.

You may choose to sign up for Mattel Login to access additional functions and features. If you sign up for Mattel Login, we will collect additional information from you. For more information about Mattel Login, please see Mattel Login FAQ.

  • If you are a child (under 13 in the US or as otherwise defined in your country/region of residence), we will collect your date of birth, a username and password, and a parent’s email address.
  • If you are not a child, we will collect your date of birth and an email address and password.

We use date of birth to flag children in our system to help ensure that kids access activities appropriate for them, but we immediately delete the child’s date of birth. We use the parent’s email address to provide notice to the parent and request parental consent when needed, depending on additional data we might request to make new features and activities available. For users who sign up with Mattel Login that are not children, we use their email address to provide notifications and updates as described in Mattel’s Privacy Statement.

Do the Smart Track™, Race Portal, and Hot Wheels™ id cars collect information from the User?

No. The Smart Track™ only identifies the pieces that are connected to the rest of the Booster / race portal chain. The vehicle has a uniquely encoded near-field communication (“NFC”) chip that is only transferred when vehicle crosses over the Race Portal’s NFC reader. The Race Portal collects data regarding car’s performance, such as completed laps and speed around the track.

How does Mattel protect the privacy of its users?

Mattel is deeply committed to safety and security, and it is an integral part of our approach to the design of our connected products. Mattel and its partners are dedicated to complying with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), an important law designed to protect the online privacy of children under 13, the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), and other applicable privacy regulations.

For more information, please see Mattel’s Privacy Statement.

What privacy and security measures does Mattel use to safeguard information for Hot Wheels™ id?

Mattel is committed to the below seven core principles of privacy and security by design for Hot Wheels™ id, and we have implemented safeguards to protect personal information from unauthorized access.

  • Simplify Objectives and Purpose Limitation: We make every effort to simplify our product functionality, so we can limit the data collected to support only the essential features necessary for us to create and operate innovative products, without ever violating our customer’s trust through data misuse.
  • Data Minimization and Protection: We restrict the information we collect to information needed to support our operations; for example, to provide functionality, improve our products and services, manage our business, and respond to questions or issues.
  • End-to-End Security: Security and privacy are embedded front-to-back into the product lifecycle. Examples include secure design and code reviews, bug bounty, and hardware security testing during the design & development prior to release. During the time the product is in production, we conduct active mobile app scanning and penetration testing, while maintaining diligent quality control and change management security assessments for any maintenance patches or upgrades to functionality. These security processes continue until we retire the product.
  • Layered Security: We combine multiple mitigating security safeguards to protect resources and data. Examples of this include Transport Layer Encryption for data in-transit and database encryption for data at-rest, while data loss prevention and malicious website inspection/blocking are layered in above the encryption safeguards.
  • Least Privilege: Ensure that every component within the Hot Wheel ™ id product ecosystem is only able to access the information and resources that are necessary for its legitimate purpose.
  • Fail Securely: Handling errors securely is key. During our design and development process, we build robust error handling into our platforms and products to ensure no unintended exposure of sensitive user data.
  • Zero Trust: Zero trust means that for all sensitive data, we implement security processes that “trust nothing and verify everything.” We maintain round-the-clock zero trust safeguards everywhere that our Hot Wheels™ id product data resides or moves, using operational security tools like network monitoring, next generation firewalls, and intrusion detection/prevention.

Is Hot Wheels™ id certified by a third party for privacy?

The security and privacy of Hot Wheels™ id is certified by Electronic Software Ratings Board (ESRB), an independent COPPA Safe Harbor provider approved by the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”). ESRB seals signify compliance with applicable privacy laws and best practices related to the online collection and use of personal information, including but not limited to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Does Hot Wheels™ id use an age gate to exclude children from using certain features?

Mattel has designed Hot Wheels™ id to provide a rich experience at launch that is appealing for users of all ages. We ask for age information when the Companion App is downloaded for purposes of collecting aggregate demographics regarding our users.

We do use an age gate for users that chose to sign up for Mattel Login so that we can identify children and collect information needed to communicate with their parent to provide notifications and obtain parental consent if needed. There is no requirement to sign up with Mattel Login to use Hot Wheels™ id. However, we may add features that may only be accessed by children if they have a Mattel Login account.

How does Mattel ensure that my and my child’s information won’t be used improperly by third parties and service providers?

Mattel shares user information with third party service providers to offer and improve our products, understand our users, and operate our business. Third party service providers are not allowed to use information obtained through their work with us for their own marketing purposes. Mattel uses commercially reasonable and appropriate measures to protect consumer data from improper use by third party service providers. When required, we obtain consent from a user or a parent to share information with third parties and offer a mechanism for opting out of such sharing. For more information, see Mattel’s Privacy Statement.

How can I access, update, or delete information Mattel has about my child in connection with Hot Wheels™ id?

If you delete the Companion App, the data associated with that instance of Hot Wheels™ id (including your digital garage and game progress) will be deleted, though any in-App purchases can be obtained if the App is downloaded again as a function of the app store operations If you download the App later, you will need to scan your cars into the App again to retrieve data associated with the car.

If your child has signed up for a Mattel Login account, you may use the Mattel Login Parent Portal to access, update or delete your child’s account. Additional information regarding choices available to you with respect to your information or your child’s information is available in Mattel’s Privacy Statement.

Product Support and Troubleshooting

How do I know if my Wi-fi is working?

When the Wi-fi icon in the top bar of your smart device is lit up, you are connected to Wi-fi.

I’m having trouble getting my Wi-fi to work. What do I do?

If you’re having issues connecting to Wi-fi, check your modem or router and perhaps disconnect then re-connect the hardwire cable. You can also try disabling then re-enabling Wi-fi on your smart device.

How do I know if my Bluetooth® is working?

If your Bluetooth® is working, you’ll see the icon illuminated on the top bar of your smart device. If your smart device is connected to the Race Portal, the blue light will be solid blue. When your device is not connected the light will pulse blue.

I’m having trouble getting my Bluetooth® to work. What do I do?

Try turning off your portal and then turning it back on again. If you are still experiencing issues, please visit us at https://service.mattel.com/us/ContactUs.aspx for further support.

Will Mattel provide updates for Hot Wheels™ id or its Companion App? If so how?

Yes, Mattel will provide updates to the Companion App and to the Race Portal as needed to support proper functioning and security. You will need access to Wi-fi and/or Bluetooth® to receive these updates.

Do I have to do anything to get updates for Hot Wheels™ id or its Companion App?

If automatic app updates are enabled on your mobile device, then the latest software will be automatically downloaded and applied to the Companion App as soon as it’s available. If automatic app updates have been disabled, you may have to manually return to the Apple App store or Google Play store to obtain the latest version.

Firmware updates for the race portal and Smart Track™ will be automatically downloaded and applied when they’re available as long as you have the Companion App installed and Wi-fi and Bluetooth are enabled on your device.

I can no longer see my car in my garage. How can I fix that?

Cars can only exist in the garage on one device at a time. Scan your car again using the Portal or a compatible mobile device to return it to your garage.

The Companion App is freezing/crashing. What should I do?

Please try one of the following steps:

  1. Close all apps on your smart device, including Hot Wheels™ id
  2. Go to your device Settings and enable “Airplane Mode” to disconnect from your data and Wi-Fi connection
  3. Restart your device

If this doesn’t work, please make sure you have the latest version of your operating system and the latest version of the App installed on your device.

My Hot Wheels™ id cars are registering incorrect speeds.

If the car is going slow through the race portal, it should register low top speed. But if extremely slow, the portal will assume car is not in active play. It will recognize the car ID but ignore the car speed.

If the car goes through the Portal at a fast speed and hits a barrier that bounces the car back through the portal, expect a fast first read but a slow second read.

Also, there is the case that the car in play may jump the speed sensor in the race portal. In this case, the reads may be inaccurate.

If none of the above is happening and you have a second Hot Wheels™ id car, see if the speed reads are more accurate with a second car.

I keep losing connection between the Race Portal and my smart device.
